Crane & Rigging Basics — poster
A crane pick involves physics that doesn't forgive guessing: load weight, angles, capacity charts, ground conditions. Most rigging failures trace to one of three things — unknown weight, damaged slings, or bad communication.
“About a ton” is how slings snap. Weigh it, calculate it from drawings, or don't lift it. Capacity drops as sling angles flatten — a 60° angle loads slings far more than vertical.
Cuts, kinks, crushed strands, chemical burns, illegible tags = destroyed on the spot, not put back on the truck. Slings without a readable rated-capacity tag don't lift.
One designated, qualified signal person; everyone else stays out of the operator's dialogue. Anyone can yell STOP — only the signal person directs the load.
Nobody under the load, nobody between the load and anything fixed. Use taglines to control swing — never hands on a moving load.
