The fall that maims isn't from the top

Of the 258 falls with a recorded height, 57% happened below 11 feet — ladders, equipment platforms, ice bridges, the first section of the climb. Falls from above 30 feet are the rarest category in the data, partly because 100% tie-off discipline is strongest where the danger feels obvious. The data says: the danger is everywhere the harness feels optional.

July is the amputation month for heat

Heat-related severe injuries by month. July alone accounts for 46%of the sector's heat cases; June–August together, 84%. Every one of these is preventable with acclimatization, water-rest-shade scheduling, and crews trained to spot early heat illness.

The amputation problem nobody talks about

389 of 2,441 severe injuries — one in six — ended in amputation, and 496 cases (20%) involved fingers or hands. The machinery behind it isn't exotic: capstan hoists, winches, pinch points on shifting steel. Hand placement and hoist discipline aren't soft topics — they are where a fifth of this industry's worst days come from.

Ten years, no victory lap

Severe injuries per year. The 2020–2021 dip tracks reduced build activity, not safer sites — counts returned with the 5G build-out. *2025 covers January–October.

Texas alone accounts for 27%of the sector's severe injuries — more than the next three states combined. (Federal-jurisdiction states only; state-plan states like California report separately and are not in this dataset.)

Source: OSHA Severe Injury Reports(employer-reported amputations, in-patient hospitalizations and eye losses under federal OSHA jurisdiction), January 2015 – October 2025. We filtered to NAICS 517 (telecommunications) and NAICS 2371 (utility & communication-line construction) — 2,441records — and categorized events by OSHA's own event codes. State-plan states report separately and are excluded by the source data. This analysis is independent and is not endorsed by OSHA.
