Fire Safety & Extinguishers

A job-site fire doubles in size every 30–60 seconds. The difference between an incident report and a catastrophe is usually the first two minutes — and whether the nearest extinguisher works and someone knows how to use it.

1
Know your extinguishers

Class A: wood, paper, trash. B: flammable liquids. C: electrical. Most site units are ABC. Check the gauge is in the green and the pin is sealed — monthly.

2
PASS

Pull the pin. Aim at the BASE of the fire. Squeeze the handle. Sweep side to side. Fight only small, contained fires with your back to an exit — anything bigger, evacuate and call 911.

3
Control hot work

Welding, cutting, grinding need a permit where required, a fire watch during and 30 minutes after, and combustibles cleared or covered within 35 ft.

4
Fuel and flammables

Gas cans must be approved safety cans, stored away from ignition and exits. Propane cylinders upright and secured. Oily rags in closed metal containers — they self-ignite in piles.
