Ladders feel harmless because we use them everywhere — and that's exactly why they injure 100,000+ workers a year. Nearly every ladder accident traces back to the same few shortcuts.
Check the duty rating against your weight plus tools. Fiberglass near electrical — never aluminum. Extension ladders must extend 3 ft above the landing point.
Firm, level ground. 4-to-1 angle for extension ladders (1 ft out for every 4 ft up). Lock the spreaders on step ladders. Barricade doorways behind you.
Two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand, at all times. Haul tools up with a rope or tool belt — never carry them in your hands while climbing.
Keep your belt buckle between the rails. Moving the ladder takes 30 seconds; a fall takes months of recovery.
