Machines don't know you're inside them. LOTO exists because “I turned it off” isn't the same as “it can't turn on.” Stored energy — electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, gravity — has killed workers minutes after shutdown.
Everyone working on the equipment puts on their OWN lock. Your life doesn't hang on someone else's memory.
Prepare → shut down → isolate → lock & tag → release stored energy → VERIFY by trying to start it. The verify step is where LOTO saves lives — never skip it.
Capacitors hold charge after power-off. Hydraulic lines stay pressurized. Springs stay loaded. Raised parts want to fall. Bleed, block, and dissipate before you reach in.
Never cut or remove someone else's lock. If a lock is left behind, follow the supervisor-verified removal procedure — the owner might still be inside the machine.
