MEWP / Aerial Lift Safety

Boom lifts and scissor lifts put you 30–130 feet up on a platform that moves. The two big killers are ejection — the boom whips when the base drops into a hole — and electrocution from reaching too close to power lines.

Harness in the boom

In boom-type lifts, a full-body harness with a short lanyard to the designated anchor is mandatory — a boom bounce can launch you over the rails. Check your manufacturer rules for scissor lifts.

Walk the route first

Holes, drop-offs, debris, soft ground, slopes beyond the machine's rating — find them BEFORE the wheels do. Function-test controls and emergency lowering at ground level.

Power lines: 10 feet minimum

More for higher voltages. The lift is a grounded steel path, and booms drift more than you think. Treat every line as energized.

Never bypass, never climb out

Interlocks and alarms stay active. Feet stay on the platform floor — no ladders on platforms, no climbing on rails, no exiting at height unless specifically trained and equipped for it.
