RF Radiation Safety

Radio-frequency energy from antennas cooks tissue from the inside — you can absorb a harmful dose without feeling anything until it's done. On towers and rooftops, live antennas often sit exactly where you need to put your hands.

1
Assume every antenna is live

Sites transmit even when they look idle, and carriers don't call before they power up. Verify lockout/power-down through the carrier's NOC before working in front of antennas — a phone call is not confirmation someone flipped a switch.

2
Respect signage and barriers

Blue INFO, yellow CAUTION, red WARNING signs mark increasing RF zones. If your work path crosses a marked zone, you need authorization and possibly a power-down.

3
Distance is your friend

RF intensity drops fast with distance. Never work directly in front of a transmitting panel or dish. Even a few feet off-axis dramatically cuts exposure.

4
Use a personal RF monitor

On telecom structures, a calibrated RF monitor on your body warns you before you're overexposed. If it alarms — move away first, investigate second. Report suspected overexposure the same day.
