Scaffold Safety

Two-thirds of construction workers use scaffolds — and scaffold violations sit in OSHA's top 5 every single year. A scaffold is a structure, and structures fail when they're assembled wrong, overloaded, or modified by whoever needed a piece removed.

1
Competent person inspects

Before every shift and after any change or weather event. Look for full planking, plumb legs, base plates on firm ground, and locked casters.

2
Full guardrails above 10 feet

Top rail, mid rail, toe board — or personal fall arrest. Missing rails are the single most-cited scaffold violation.

3
Never modify without authority

Removing a brace, plank, or tie to “get access” can drop the whole structure. Only the competent person authorizes changes.

4
Mind the load and the weather

Know the rated capacity — workers plus materials plus tools. Clear snow and ice before working. Stay off scaffolds in high wind and storms.
