Slips, Trips & Same-Level Falls

Same-level falls put more workers in the ER than almost anything else — a moment of bad footing becomes a broken wrist, a concussion, months off work. The causes are boring: cords, mud, spills, bad lighting. That's why nobody respects them.

1
Housekeeping is safety

Cords and hoses overhead or along walls, not across walkways. Scrap and debris cleaned as you go, not “later.” Materials staged out of paths.

2
Clean spills immediately

Water, oil, hydraulic fluid — clean it now or barricade and mark it. A spill you walked past is a spill you own.

3
Watch the transitions

Most slips happen at changes: wet to dry, smooth to rough, light to dark, stairs and curbs. Slow down at transitions, use handrails, keep a hand free.

4
Footwear and pace

Slip-resistant soles with tread that isn't worn smooth. Shorten your stride on slick surfaces. Carrying a load that blocks your view means two trips, not one big one.
