MEWP certification means completing general operator training — pre-use inspection, load limits and stability, fall protection, and emergency procedures — then passing a quiz for a certificate of completion. Online, that half takes about an hour and the certificate is valid two years. A second requirement, familiarization on the exact machine you'll run, is separate: it happens with your employer, standing at the equipment, and no course can do it for you.
What does MEWP certification actually cover?
MEWP stands for mobile elevated work platform — the ANSI A92 name for what most crews still call an aerial lift: scissor lifts, boom lifts, vertical mast lifts, cherry pickers. The name changed when the A92 standards were rewritten in 2018, which is why site paperwork and jobsite talk often don't match.
A general operator training course covers the class of machine, not one specific unit:
- Pre-use inspection and the walkaround before the platform leaves the ground
- Load limits and stability — rated capacity, occupants plus tools plus material, and the geometry that decides whether a machine tips
- Fall protection on a platform, and why a boom lift and a scissor lift answer that differently
- Terrain and environment: slopes, soft ground, overhead obstructions, energized lines nearby
- Hazard recognition — the mistakes that show up again and again in incident reports
- Emergency planning and rescue: ground controls, emergency descent, having a plan before someone is stuck at height

The 2018 rewrite split the requirement in two, and this is where a generic "certification" course can mislead you. General operator training is what a course delivers: the class-wide knowledge above. Familiarization is specific to the exact model you're about to operate — its controls, its capacity chart, where its emergency lowering valve is — and ANSI A92 puts that requirement on your employer, at the machine, before you use it. A certificate that implies it clears you to run any lift on any site is describing something training cannot do.

How long does MEWP certification take?
About one hour, self-paced online. Most people finish in one sitting; progress saves if you split it across a break or two. The final quiz allows free retakes.
How long is a MEWP certificate valid?
Two years. It verifies online by its own code for that whole period, and we email you before it expires so renewal isn't a scramble.
Is MEWP certification OSHA-approved?
No provider's course is, outside the OSHA Outreach Training Program — the OSHA 10/30 DOL-card system delivered by OSHA-authorized trainers.
