What a capstan hoist is, and why rope handling is the whole job
A capstan hoist raises a load by friction: the rope takes several turns around a powered drum, and the operator controls the lift by how much tension they hold on the tail. Nothing clamps. Nothing locks. The load is held by the operator’s hands and the wraps on the drum, which is why an experienced crew watches the tail line rather than the load.
That design is what makes the hoist so useful on a tower — it is light, it mounts to the structure, and any length of rope works — and it is also what makes it unforgiving. Too few wraps and the rope slips. Too many and it can foul and self-tension. A worn rope, a bad mount or a distracted tail hand all fail the same way, which is a load coming back down.

This course is about the capstan hoist used on towers and line work. It is not construction hoist training — a material or personnel hoist, the builder’s lift that runs up the side of a building, is a different machine under different rules and this will not cover it. It is also not a substitute for familiarization on your own unit: capstans differ in drum size, drive and mounting, and your employer still has to walk you through the one you will actually rig. We would rather say that here than take money for the wrong course.

Inspection and pre-use checks
Rope condition and retirement criteria, drum wear, guards and controls, and what a failed check obliges you to do.
Rope handling and wraps
Number of wraps, tail tension, keeping the tail clear, and recovering control when the rope starts to slip or foul.
Load management
Rated capacity, angle and friction losses, dynamic loads from a snatch, and doing the arithmetic before the lift rather than during it.
Rigging technique
Slings, hitches and tag lines for the loads that actually go up a tower — tools, sections, antennas and coax.
Maintenance and storage
Post-use care, rope storage and retirement, and the records that make an inspection defensible later.

Who needs capstan hoist training
Everyone on the rope, not only the person at the drum. A capstan lift is a crew action — the tail hand, the rigger at the load and the person at the top all have to agree on what is happening.
Tower climbers
You rig the load at the top, and you are directly under anything that comes back down.
Telecom and line crews
Raising sections, antennas, coax and tooling on structures a crane cannot reach.

Does the certificate qualify me to operate any capstan?
It covers the operator training and documents it. Capstans differ in drum size, drive and mounting, so your employer still has to familiarize you with the specific unit you will rig — the same pattern as any other piece of equipment. What you get here is the transferable knowledge and a verifiable record of it.
How long does the course take?

Whether it satisfies a given site is the employer’s or site owner’s decision.
