What is a Qualified Electrical Worker?

OSHA defines a qualified person as one who has received training in, and has demonstrated skills and knowledge in, the construction and operation of electric equipment and installations and the hazards involved. NFPA 70E says much the same and spells out the safety half: the person can identify the hazards present and reduce the risk they carry.

Read those definitions closely and you find two requirements, not one. Training is the knowledge: boundaries, PPE categories, what an arc flash does, how to justify energized work. Demonstrated skill is the other half, and it is specific to the equipment and the task in front of you. Someone can be qualified on one panel and unqualified on the switchgear beside it.

No course can make you qualified. Here is who actually decides.

Your employer designates who is qualified, and they do it on both halves — documented training plus skills you have shown on the specific equipment. A provider that sells you a “QEW certification” and implies the paper alone settles it is describing something training cannot do. What this course gives you is the training half, documented with a certificate that verifies online by its own code, so your employer has the record they need to make the designation.

What is a Qualified Electrical Worker?

A qualified person, in OSHA’s words, is one who has received training in and has demonstrated skills and knowledge in the construction and operation of electric equipment and installations, and the hazards involved. NFPA 70E adds the safety-training half: identifying the hazards present and reducing the risk they carry. Both halves matter — knowing the theory is not enough if you have never worked the equipment in front of you.

Does this course make me a qualified electrical worker?

It covers the training component, which is the part a course can deliver. The designation itself is your employer’s to make: they confirm you have the training and that you have demonstrated the skills on the specific equipment and tasks you will work on. Our certificate documents the training half with a code anyone can verify online. Any provider promising to make you “qualified” by itself is describing something training cannot do.

How long does QEW training take?

About three hours, self-paced. Most people finish in one sitting, but progress saves as you go, so you can split it across a few evenings or a lunch break. The final test allows unlimited free retakes.

How long is the certificate valid?

Two years, and it verifies online by its unique code for that whole period. We email you before it expires. Two years is the refresher interval most employers and site owners expect for electrical safety training.

Is this course OSHA-approved?

No provider’s course is. Outside the OSHA Outreach Training Program — the OSHA 10/30 DOL-card system delivered by OSHA-authorized trainers — OSHA does not approve, accept or certify training. Our courses are built to OSHA standards, and what you receive is a certificate of completion that verifies online by its own code. Whether it satisfies a given site is the employer’s or site owner’s decision.

What is the difference between QEW and NFPA 70E training?

NFPA 70E is the standard; QEW describes the person the standard expects. This course teaches the 70E material — approach boundaries, the arc-flash PPE category method, energized-work justification — framed around what a qualified worker has to do with it on site.

Do I need to be a licensed electrician to take it?

No. The course is written for anyone who works on or near energized equipment: electricians and apprentices, industrial maintenance staff, tower and telecom technicians, and facilities crews. A license is a separate, state-issued credential and is not what this course is about.

Can I train a whole crew at once?
